Ride the 9-1-1 Wave into the 21st Century!


The purpose of the forum is to provide an educational opportunity for the NENA/APCO Joint Pacific Chapter, 9-1-1 public safety community, islands leadership, lawmakers, and private sector partners.  The goal of the two day forum is to develop an understanding of Federal, State and County requirements in order to achieve maximum benefit from the statewide Next Generation 9-1-1 technology advancements that have now been implemented. 

The APCO/NENA Pacific Island Chapter will host the forum on April 14th and 15th, 2014 at the Marriott Waikiki Beach Hotel.  This event will coincide with National Telecommunicators Week honoring Hawaii’s 9-1-1 public safety professionals.  Conference Registration is $300.

Sponsorships are available for all interested parties in order for the APCO/NENA Joint Pacific Chapter to offset funding for the forum.  Platinum Sponsorship:  $5000.  Gold Sponsorship:  $2500.  Silver Sponsorship: $1500.  Bronze Sponsorship: $1000.   Exhibit Table Top is $250 however is complimentary for Platinum sponsors.

This forum is intended to bring Hawaii’s 9-1-1 community together in one place to gain vision, insight, and education on the statewide new advanced 9-1-1 IP enabled technology infrastructure.  The forum will allow the State of Hawaii Enhanced 9-1-1 Board, counties, and the public safety community to strategically take full advantage of these new advancements that are now possible to better serve the public.  Attendees will gain an understanding of the new infrastructure now in place in Hawaii.  

With more wireless and digital communications devices being utilized by the public at a rapid growth, offering capabilities like text messaging video can provide much more information to public safety in times of emergency. This forum will focus on national and the state of Hawaii efforts in the new IP world.

9:30am-10:30am      Keynote:  Martin Buser – Champion of Sled Dog Racing and Iditarod Race Winner. 

Martin began mushing at age seventeen in Switzerland.  In 1979 he relocated to Alaska to train and raise sled dogs.  He entered his first Iditarod in 1980 and has been in every race since 1986.  Out of thirty Iditarod’s, Martin Buser has won the event four times.  Martin’s sense of humor and positive outlook makes him an inspiring motivational speaker.

Device-provided location information is more important than ever in the growing wireless environment and will be required to accurately route 9-1-1 calls using GIS data.  This session will cover the basic of NG9-1-1 GIS system and added features that one can expect when spatially routing calls.

The Department of Justice has clearly placed accessibility as a priority for NG9-1-1 and The Federal Communications Commission has also updated its rules to accommodate the new technologies improving access to 9-1-1 for the deaf, hard of hearing, and other groups that cannot access 9-1-1 through traditional voice communications.

The panel will discuss how SMS texting to 9-1-1 works along with the PSAP training needs for efficiently handling Text to 9-1-1 calls for emergency assistance.  Through recent rule making by the FCC and partnerships with the four major wireless carriers the wireless industry has committed to making text to 9-1-1 available by May of this year.  The panel will also discuss the coordinated effort for statewide Text to 9-1-1 in Hawaii.
